About TSA wait times at RDU
Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) is the primary airport for the Research Triangle — Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill — and one of the fastest-growing midsize airports in the southeastern US. RDU sits roughly equidistant from the three cities and serves a heavy mix of corporate, university, and biotech-corridor travelers.
RDU operates from two terminals: Terminal 1 (a smaller building used by Frontier, Allegiant, Avelo, Sun Country, and a few others) and Terminal 2 (the much larger main terminal, used by American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Air Canada, and most international carriers). Each terminal has its own TSA checkpoint. Terminal 2's checkpoint is the airport's main bottleneck because it covers the bulk of the airport's traffic.
Because the Research Triangle's tech and pharma economies lean toward Tuesday-Thursday business travel, RDU's weekday rhythm is very different from its Friday-Sunday leisure pattern. Atlas's predictions account for that — the line at 6 AM Tuesday looks nothing like Saturday morning at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
When are TSA lines longest at RDU?
Terminal 2's morning push (5:00–7:30 AM) is the airport's most reliable peak. Sunday evenings between 4 and 8 PM are the second-heaviest window. Tuesday mornings are the worst weekday for business travelers. Atlas's prediction will tell you the specific shape of your day.
How early should I arrive at Raleigh-Durham?
Domestic with PreCheck on a normal day: 60–75 minutes. Standard lane during a Tuesday morning bank or Sunday-evening return rush: 90+ minutes. International: 2 hours per usual rules. Atlas will give you a tighter prediction than any flat guideline.
Does RDU have TSA PreCheck?
Yes — Terminal 2 has dedicated PreCheck lanes, and CLEAR is available there as well. Terminal 1 has more limited PreCheck hours, so check before you go if you're flying out of Frontier, Allegiant, or another T1 carrier.
What about parking at RDU?
RDU has on-airport Daily, ParkRDU Economy 3 and 4 (cheaper, shuttle-served), and Park & Ride economy lots. The Daily decks attached to each terminal fill first on a Tuesday morning. ParkEcon is the cheapest if you don't mind the shuttle — Atlas's wait prediction can help you decide whether you can take the time hit.
Which terminal is my flight at RDU?
Terminal 1: Frontier, Allegiant, Avelo, Sun Country, and a small handful of others. Terminal 2: American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, Air Canada, plus international carriers. The two terminals are NOT connected airside; if you're connecting between them, you'll re-clear security.
